The drama and excitement of the Winter Olympics is now behind us, but maybe just watching the action wasn’t enough. At the World Alternative Games anyone can come and have a go – no years of training or expensive equipment required!
The inaugural games were held in 2012 as a compliment to the summer Olympics and were such a success that this year is set to prove to be bigger and better. Taking place between the 8th and 25th August, based mainly in the Llanwrtyd Wells area of Mid Wales, there are over 50 events ranging from quirky to bizarre! Pooh sticks, office chair racing, wife carrying, husband dragging and bouncy castle wrapping are just a few of the events on offer and give you a wonderful idea of what these games are all about. Participation rather than winning is at the heart of this delightful occasion!
Other events encompassed by the World Alternative Games umbrella are the Welsh Worm Charming Championships and the World Bog Snorkelling Championships, both taking place in the two weeks of the games.
Llanwrtyd Wells, the smallest town in Britain, is surrounded by glorious scenery and has a good choice of restaurants and pubs. 1 Station Cottages is within easy walking distance of the town and just across from the small station on the Heart of Wales train line. Sleeping 4, in three bedrooms, the cosy cottage provides a great base for competitors and spectators alike, or just for those wanting to come an explore this lovely area close to the Cambrian Mountains and the Brecon Beacons.
