Dylan Thomas on Royal Mail Stamp issued today
The birth centenary of Welsh poet and writer Dylan Thomas has been marked today by a new 1st Class stamp that has been issued by Royal Mail today.
His best known work is undoubtedly Under Milk Wood and the film starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor but this was originally produced as a play for radio. Dylan’s stamp is one of a set of ten out today entitled ‘Remarkable Lives’, the fourth in a series from Royal Mail ‘depicting Britons who have made significant contributions to the British way of life’.
All the other stamps in today’s set also mark birth centenaries featuring actors Sir Alec Guinness and Kenneth Moore, theatre director and writer Joan Littlewood, graphic designer Abram Games and Roy Plumley who presented BBC Radio’s Desert Island discs for 43 years. Also included are Joe Mercer (football player and manager), Barbara Ward (economist and broadcaster), molecular biologist Max Perutz and Nooruniaa Inayat Khan - Special Operations Executive agent in occupied France.
