A very worthy cause!

Last year, whilst we were preparing our next brochure here in the office, we thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce a donation scheme in support of a charity close to our hearts, The Wales Air Ambulance. So far we have raised over £560 thanks to the very kind contributions of our holidaymakers; doesn’t sound a huge amount but anything we can raise will contribute to their life saving work.

All of us working for Wales Cottage Holidays know at least a couple of people who may well would not still be with us if it wasn’t for the swift intervention of the specially trained paramedic team in the air ambulance. A sobering thought that if it wasn’t for the generosity of the public the Wales Air Ambulance would not exist.

The charity has three bases; Caernarfon, Welshpool and Swansea. From one of these three bases the helicopters can reach any location in Wales within 20 minutes. This is so necessary in a country where the landscape, although majestic and breath taking, doesn’t lend itself to covering long distances quickly by road and when the prompt arrival of medics can make all the difference to the final outcome of an incident.

The service was launched on St David’s Day on 2001 and so far has flown on over 20,400 missions. The charity is always looking to provide the most effective care possible with upgrades to the helicopters and equipment whenever possible. This spring sees the introduction of doctors to the crew which, along with pioneering new equipment and the facility to carry blood on missions, is sure to see even more lives being saved.

Per year, the charity requires about £6million pounds to keep all three helicopters in the air and it is funded completely through public donations and the work of their associated charity shops.

The Wales Air Ambulance does run its own lottery scheme and each week there is a guaranteed jackpot of £1000, plus smaller prizes as well so if you are looking for a new charity to support regularly this seems a good place to start. For one off donations text HELIO £3 to make a contribution towards the three helicopters or of course you can donate when booking one of our fabulous cottages!
