Ruthin Gaol

Ruthin Gaol

Ruthin Gaol was opened in 1802 as a small prison which had four cells for prisoners and nine rooms for debtors. Conditions in the cells were so dark, dirty and cramped that by the late C18th work had started to expand the gaol to allow the accommodation to hold up to 100 prisoners. In 1916, Ruthin Gaol closed down so prisoners and guards had to transfer to other prisons. The building came alive again during World War II as it was converted to a munitions factory. In 2004 the gaol was reopened as a heritage attraction. Visit Ruthin Gaol today and experience how the Victorian prison operated, and how this affected the prisoners. One of the punishments for prisoners was for them to be taken to the sensory deprivation cell which was pitch black and condemned, although other punishments included a spell in the stocks, branding, whipping, and even execution. This popular museum is a highlight of North East Wales where you can learn its fascinating history and listen to a range of suspected ghost activity.
