The town lies on the River Cain by the Berwyn Mountains and has a population of some 1,400. The church of St Myllin was founded in the C7th by an Irish Bishop and the present building dates back to 1706; nearby is the holy well of St Myllin.
The vision of the Llanfyllin Workhouse Project is to preserve the historic building, Y Dolydd, and turn it into a centre for creativity, education and sustainability. The town's Sports Centre has a swimming pool, squash courts and a fitness room. Near Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant in the Berwyn Mountains is the Pistyll Rhaeadr; at 240ft high, it is the tallest single drop waterfall in the UK.
