Awel-y-Grug is in the hamlet of Sarnau, 3 miles NE of Bala on the edge of Snowdonia National Park and in an ideal spot for touring and sightseeing throughout North Wales.
This C18th stone cottage, converted from a former Chapel adjoining the owner's home, has recently been refurbished. The cosy beamed living room has a woodburner in the stone inglenook fireplace, TV, DVD and radio/CD player and the compact modern fitted kitchen includes a small freezer. Upstairs in this charming cottage the bedroom has a double and a single bed, and the contemporary en suite benefits from a bath and a separate shower cubicle. Oil-fired central heating run from the owner's system is included, logs are supplied, WiFi is available and the owners offer use of their washing machine if required. The lovely landscaped gardens are shared with the owners and there is a barbecue as well as patio furniture for your use.
This is an excellent area for walking, trekking, birdwatching, fishing and horse riding; local bicycle hire is also available. Bala has the largest natural lake in Wales, and you can appreciate the beauty of the area with a relaxing trip on the Bala Lake Railway. The town itself has a leisure centre and a range of shops, pubs and restaurants. Nearby is the renowned National White Water Centre where you can experience exhilarating rafting and canoeing on the rushing rapids.

The market town of Bala is alongside the impressive Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid in Welsh), 4 miles long by 1 mile wide, and surrounded by rolling hills in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park. Kayaks, dinghies and other types of craft are available for rent. And of course the National White Water Rafting Centre is located at Frongoch near Bala.
This pleasant market town has a good variety of shops, cafes and pubs including an award winning butcher and local beer shop. Bala Lake Railway runs steam trains on a 9 mile long, 2ft narrow gauge track on the eastern shore of the lake, from Llanuwchllyn to Bala town. Passengers enjoy excellent views of the lake and its surrounding scenery of forests, rolling hills and the nearby mountains - Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy.
There are a number of golf courses in the area, including Bala and Dolgellau. Harlech, on the west coast, sports one of the finest golf courses in the world, The Royal St. David's. A short drive is the Glan Gors Park Karting Circuit, the longest karting circuit in the North West and Wales.
For history lovers there are 2 famous religious sites nearby - Rhug Chapel and Llangar Church. Rhug is a rare example of a little-altered private C17th chapel, the plain exterior belies with riches within - angels, elaborate paintings, ghoulish skeleton. Llangar to Corwen just after Cynwyd, a small medieval building in an idyllic setting overlooking the confluence of the Dee and Alwen rivers. Inside it takes you back to another age with many ancient features including extensive C15th wall paintings, C17th figure of death, old beams, box pews, pulpit and minstrels gallery.
For those wanting some fine dining, the elegant and luxurious Pale Hall which welcomes non-residents for breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner is a treat! Just a short drive away is the Tyddyn Llan Restaurant with its Michelin Star - one of Wales' best restaurants.
OUR TOP THINGS TO DO
Walk up the Berwyn mountains to the Stone Circle. Stunning panoramic views over the valley below and the 41 stone circle itself is also very attractive, with an extra one inside, a mini Stonehenge. Also a fantastic spot to see the sun set enjoy a griddle fried egg and bacon batch on the terrace at the Rhug Farm Shop on the A5 - delicious. Make it a full Gourmet Getaway with dinner at Michelin Star Tyddyn Llan Restaurant.
Drive along the Horse Show Pass above Llangollen and admire the scenery. Also enjoy Panorama Walk, thought to be one of the best viewing points in the whole of Wales, have a pot of tea and home baked cakes at Prospect Garden Tea Rooms
Take the Bala Lake narrow gauge railway along a 9 mile delightful journey with excellent views of the lake and through the mountains on the edge of Snowdonia National park. Or visit the steam railway at Llangollen - Thomas the Take Engine and Santa are known to visit.
Walk along the canal over the World Heritage UNESCO Thomas Telford's famous Pontcysylite Aqueduct at Froncysylite, 126ft above the River Dee.
