Things to do in Eryri / Snowdonia National Park 

Eryri / Snowdonia National Park is one of the biggest national parks in Britain. Covering an area of 823 square miles, it includes over 100 lakes as well as the tallest mountain in England and Wales. Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon is very popular with walkers and has a number of walking paths, ranging in difficulty level.  

If you want to go up to the mighty summit but don’t fancy the trek, jump on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. The steam-hauled, single-carriage trains have been taking visitors to the summit for over a century and it takes about 2.5 hours for the return journey. Half an hour of this is spent at the peak, where you can enjoy the magnificent views for miles and miles around. On a clear day, you can see as far as Pembrokeshire and Ireland! The visitor centre at the top is called Hafod Eryri and provides visitors with refreshment facilities, toilets and information about the history of the mountain.  

Located in beautiful Llandudno on the north coast just outside Eryri / Snowdonia, you’ll find the Great Orme Mines. These copper mines were uncovered back in 1987. Archaeologists have since dated the mines to over 4,000 years ago in the Bronze Age, and continue to reveal more and more tunnels. It is now believed to be the largest Prehistoric mine discovered in the world to date. Suitable for a family holiday in Snowdonia, take a walk through the tunnels and have a sense of what our ancestors did on a daily basis thousands of years ago. 

This is also a land of local history which can be discovered from one of our cottages in Snowdonia. One of these pieces of unique history is the Ugly House in Betws-y-Coed. Known in Wales as ‘Ty Hyll’, the true origins of the house remain a mystery. However, the local legend tells us that the house was built by two brothers overnight. Under ancient law, if you could build a house between sunrise and sunset, you could claim the freehold, as long as it has walls, a roof and a smoking chimney. The Ugly House is now looked after by the Snowdonia Society and has become a very popular place for people to visit
