Fully switch off and reset in this remote holiday home for families and friends on the edge of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons). The area is a haven for outdoor adventurers, with way-marked trails leading you into the Black Mountains and nearby walking spots including Mynydd Du Forest (19 miles), Grwyne Fawr Reservoir (21 miles), and Hay Bluff (3 miles). For shopping and eating out, Hay-on-Wye is just 8 miles away.
The detached stone farmhouse is reached via a rugged farm track. Once inside, you'll find a warm and inviting retreat with beautiful original features and far-reaching rural views. Simple decor and traditional furniture are used to complement the period property. Leave your muddy boots in the porchway before heading through to the open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner which boasts a fabulous, beamed ceiling and a cosy wood burner. A farmhouse-style kitchen runs along the back wall of the room, providing everything needed for a self-catering break. Gather around the large dining table for memorable mealtimes, before settling down in the inviting lounge area to read a book or watch a DVD from the selection provided (please note, the property has a screen monitor but no TV). There is WiFi at Pen-Y-Maes although the connection may not always be reliable. Just off the main living area is the converted cowshed and milking parlour, which is now home to a table tennis table, dartboard, and a selection of games to keep everyone entertained. Upstairs, the three tastefully decorated bedrooms are within the eaves of the property, along with a shower room with underfloor heating. Outside, located in an outbuilding, you'll find a handy utility room. The garden has an open aspect to the adjoining farmland and walking trails. There is a small, walled area where you can sit and admire the spectacular mountain scenery, and you'll find further seating next to the pond. A pretty stream runs through the garden at the back of the house, so children must be supervised at all times.
Along with the endless supply of walks from your front door, you'll also be within reach of the mighty Pen y Fan (25 miles), the highest peak in South Wales. For a slice of history, head to the evocative 12th-century ruins of Llanthony Priory, just 3.5 miles from the property. The picturesque town of Hay-on-Wye also makes a lovely day out, with its cute cafes, historic buildings, and fine collection of book shops. The River Wye meanders through the town, and you can hire canoes and paddleboards to explore the area by water.
