Experience the beauty of Wales with a stay at this stylishly converted  barn on the outskirts of Gilwern. This light and spacious property is ideal for family-friendly break, a getaway with friends, or a romantic retreat for two. Nestled in the south eastern corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park near the market town of Abergavenny, it offers the perfect base to rest and recharge after days spent walking, cycling and enjoying the great outdoors.

Lovingly renovated, this single-storey abode has been beautifully finished throughout with a relaxed rural elegance. Heart of this holiday home is the bright and airy lounge/kitchen/diner. Put your feet up after a day on the trails and sink into the deep corner sofa, patio doors thrown open in warm weather or wood burner roaring on chilly evenings. Take advantage of delicious local produce to prepare home-cooked meals in the beautifully equipped kitchen, then gather around the dining table to share good food and conversation. In warm weather, fire up the BBQ and dine alfresco, enjoying the tranquil orchard views. As night falls, get cosy under the covers of two chic bedrooms: a king-size with en-suite shower room, or a twin room which has use of the family bathroom.

Enjoy a relaxing morning fishing in the farm grounds, or lace up your hiking boots and set off to explore the trails. Considered Britain’s most picturesque canal, the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal runs through Gilwern and is popular with walkers and cyclists. Or make use of the numerous trails in the surrounding Brecon Beacons. Renowned as a foodie paradise thanks to its annual food festival Abergavenny (4.5 miles) has great food options year round and even a local vineyard on the slopes of Sugar Loaf Mountain (5 miles).

An excellent cottage. All equipment almost new and of good quality. Comfortable and warm. Logs for the log burner were provided although we did not light the fire. Large bedrooms - the king sized with ensuite wet room with sink and toilet. The twin was next to the good sized family bathroom with traditional bath with shower over, sink and toilet. Read moreVery large living, dining kitchen with french doors to the terrace, with table and chairs, over looking the orchard and catching the late afternoon sun. The location of the cottage on the edge of the large village of Gilwern, with two convenience shops, one attached to the fuel station and other individual shops was a good base for visits to the local castles, The Big Pit and Ironworks at Blaenavon, the market towns of Abergavenny and Brecon and a walk along the canal. If in the area we would book the cottage again. Hide

The cottage is in a lovely secluded setting and finished to a high standard. There was plenty of space to relax and an enormous ensuite wet room as well as another bathroom. We found it easy to get to places for walking. The Big Pit is not far and Raglan Castle which were both well worth visiting.

Beautifully converted cottage, very thoughtfully and cleverly renovated to make each room spacious, but yet comfortable. We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful part of the country and enjoyed lots of lovely local walks, abbeys and castles. It is a few minutes from Abergavenny with a good choice of supermarkets.
