Soak up the serenity and the gorgeous scenery of the Welsh and English borderlands when you stay at this pretty barn at Abcott, near Clungunford. Sleeping just two guests the delightful, one-bedroom hideaway, which is 11 miles from Ludlow and 9.5 miles from Knighton, makes an exquisite bolthole for a couple seeking quiet time in beautiful surroundings. Bask in the sunshine of your private garden in summer and toast beside the wood burner in autumn and winter.

Take two steps up to enter your romantic retreat and find yourselves in a splendid, light-filled lounge/kitchen/diner, with a vaulted ceiling, whitewashed stone walls and exposed brick and timberwork. Whip up a tasty dinner for two in the kitchen area, with the delicious local produce you have sourced, then dine at the breakfast bar or out in the fresh air. Fire up the wood burner on chilly evenings then snuggle up on the sofa in front of your favourite TV programmes. When eyelids begin to droop, climb five steps up to your sleeping quarters. Here, you will find a beautiful king-size bedroom and a shower room. Indulge in a fabulous night’s sleep then awake to views out across the charming gardens. Have breakfast out here on sunny days, looking out across the lawn and listening to the birds in the trees.

Lace up your walking boots and stride out on walks through the magnificent Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Head over to the Welsh border to follow a section of the famous Offa’s Dyke Path. Keen walkers might also like to attempt sections of the Shropshire Way and Herefordshire Way. Visit Knighton, which straddles the divide between Wales and England and was once home to King Offa. Venture 5.5 miles to see the impressive, fortified medieval manor house of Stokesay Castle.

A lovely peaceful cottage, always warm, with a super wood burning stove to add cheer in an evening. Plenty of lovely local places to visit. We took the train from Craven arms for a day in Shrewsbury, and from Ludlow for a day in Hereford. Stokesay Castle is well work a visit, as well as Ludlow Castle & Church.
