At a glance

  • Characterful ground-floor cottage, set within a former barn on a smallholding
  • Close to the Brecon Beacons National Park, with walks and cycle rides from the door
  • Approximately 4.5 miles from the market town of Brecon, with its shops, restaurants and tearooms
Property code: OC-BN143

This countryside bolthole for two enjoys a peaceful setting on the outskirts of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons), 4.5 miles from Brecon. The area is awash with walking and cycling tracks, and keen ramblers can take on Pen y Fan (10 miles), the highest mountain in southern Wales. For golfers, the scenic Cradoc Golf Club is just 3 miles away.

The apartment occupies the ground floor of a converted stone barn, which is reached via a few steps. Inside, the property has a country cottage style with pastel-coloured paintwork, floral fabrics, flagstone flooring and exposed woodwork. At the heart of the home is a lounge/kitchen/diner boasting magnificent rural views. Snuggle up on the sofa in the glow of the wood burner, to watch the TV/DVD or in summer months throw open the French doors to let the outside in. In one corner, you’ll find a kitchen area with everything you need to whip up romantic dinners for two, which you can share at the sweet dining table. When it’s time for bed, retire to the pretty super-king-size bedroom, which also has French doors to the patio. A refreshing bathroom completes the accommodation. Outside, down a step, is a gravelled, enclosed patio garden with outdoor seating, a BBQ, and far-reaching countryside views.

The bustling market town of Brecon has a fantastic array of independent shops and eateries, as well as museums, art galleries, a theatre and an indoor market. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal and the River Usk both flow through the town, creating beautiful waterside walks. History enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Talgarth Mill (13 miles), the only working water mill in Bannau Brycheiniog. For sailing, canoeing and paddleboarding, Llangorse Lake is just 11 miles away.

Perfect location, and lovely hosts, glad we took our slippers as stone floors were certainly cold this time of year, a bit tricky trying to get the log burner going when your not used to one, other than that well equipped with what you need.
