Make yourself at home at this magnificent off-grid cottage perched on the slopes of the Black Mountains. Sleeping four people, this cottage provides the ideal escape for small families or groups of friends in search for a tranquil retreat high in the hills of the Brecon Beacons. It’s particularly well-suited if you’re interested in reducing your environmental footprint and using resources sparingly. During the day, explore Crickhowell Castle Ruins. Climb its ancient steps and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the Usk Valley. In the evening, open a bottle of wine by the fire pit on the cottage’s terrace and take a seat to enjoy the beautiful hill views.

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by an inviting open-plan kitchen/diner area. Its unique bohemian decor will immediately catch your eye. Climb the historic stone steps up to the vaulted sitting room and take a moment to relax in front of the wood burner before heading back to the rustic kitchen area to rustle up some dinner. Host a sociable meal at the dining table. Alternatively, head outside to the terrace to enjoy a BBQ feast while taking in the uninterrupted views of Black Mountains. After dinner, relax in the rustic shared wood fired sauna or head to the study and lose yourself in a good book. At the end of the day, make your way upstairs and you’ll find a lovely double bedroom. The sitting room also serves as an extra bedroom that features a single bed with a pull-out trundle bed.

Spend a pleasant afternoon taking in the lively atmosphere of Crickhowell’s High Street (3.5 miles). Discover unique gifts, local crafts and delicious treats in the town’s boutiques and cafes. Alternatively, head to Llangattock Escarpment (6.5 miles). The views over the Brecon Beacons are fantastic and you may be lucky enough to spot some birds of prey.

Wonderful cottage (though actually quite large), amazing views, incredibly quiet and peaceful. Suggest getting there in daylight unless you are very competent on steep tracks and narrow lanes. Wonderful attention to interior design detail with interesting materials and inspiring workmanship. Welcome-pack and gifts (cake, Welsh-cakes, butter, milk, Read moregarden flower etc.) all lovely touches and appreciated. Certain minor inconveniences on account of being off-grid but a very small price to pay for such a lovely place. Fantastic art-works everywhere and brilliant library. Would love to return and would definitely recommend. Hide

This cottage is full of rustic charm. The location is fantastic. If you want peace, birdsong and nature, its perfect. If youre looking for convenience and pristine modern amenities it is not for you. We have been twice and love it. A place to totally switch off. Highly recommended. We will definitely be back

Lovely peaceful location, great for trail running and hiking. We enjoyed cooking on the range and the homemade sauna was delightful. Be aware that supermarkets cannot deliver to this side of the valley.

This is without doubt one of the best cottages I have ever stayed in. A very harmonious restoration of an old building that has been rescued from dereliction, in about the perfect location for anyone who appreciates mountain views, dark skies, and wonderfully 'sensuround' birdsong.
