Perched above Ogmore-by-Sea in the Vale of Glamorgan, this extraordinary coastal home for six has been lovingly restored by its artist owner, with sea views slipping into room after room. Hand-crafted details, driftwood features and a self-contained loft studio give the house a wonderfully individual feel, while Ogmore Beach waits just 500 metres downhill when you fancy swapping slippers for sandy feet.
Step inside and you will quickly spot the imagination behind the interiors, starting with a bathroom inspired by a local sea cave, where the bath is wrapped in driftwood gathered from the coast. The kitchen/diner looks straight towards the water, making breakfast an excuse to loiter, while the sitting room brings everyone together around an open fire and deep red velvet sofa. When the sun appears, take a glass of wine into the rose-filled front garden or settle into the conservatory and watch the colours change over the sea. Sleeping arrangements are just as characterful: climb a paddle staircase to the timber mezzanine in the Treehouse Room, spread out in the flexible ground-floor bedroom, or claim the Skyloft: a private top-floor studio with its own kitchenette, lounge and en-suite.
Spend every day down on Ogmore Beach for rock-pooling or join the Wales Coast Path and follow it towards the ruins of Ogmore Castle (1.5 miles) and its ancient stepping stones. In the other direction, the path traces the Glamorgan Heritage Coast towards Dunraven Bay (2 miles), with cliff-top walking and a pitstop for cake and coffee at Dunraven Castle, wall gardens, and hillfort. Continue by half a mile, and you’ll be at Cwm Mawr Waterfall. Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve is 5.5 miles away for the keen wildlife spotters.
