Rhayader is a great base for lovers of the outdoors, located right next to the Elan Valley in the heart of Mid Wales. This 72-square-mile landscape is decorated with shimmering reservoirs and six Victorian dams, attracting a variety of wildlife. It’s just as stunning by night, as it’s a recognised Dark Skies Park; witness the sky in all its stellar glory. The Elan Valley offers a host of opportunities for walking and cycling around the scenic reservoirs, as well as fishing from the Claerwen river. After an active day out, Rhayader’s town centre has everything you need for something more relaxed, including a museum, parks, shops, and restaurants. 

Pay a visit to the Rhayader Museum and Gallery to discover the history of the town and the surrounding area. Or, why not take in a performance at the unique Willow Globe Theatre nearby, an open-air theatre formed from willow trees? At Gigrin Farm, located just south of the town, wild red kites are fed every day of the year. At one time, Mid Wales was home to the last few remaining red kites but due to the hard work of conservation bodies, the number of kites using the feeding station can vary from anything from a few dozen to 400 or more depending on the weather and time of year.
