Santa Special Steam Trains on Heritage Railways in North and Mid Wales

Santa has decided to give Rudolf a rest this year; he will be leaving his sleigh behind and travel instead on one of the steam train Santa Specials that will be running on most of the steam Heritage Railways in Wales in the coming weeks prior to the Christmas. Click on any of the following areas for more details in our Heritage Railways News section plus details of nearby cottages.

In North Wales and Snowdonia, you can join Santa and his elves for a trip on the Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog to Tan-y-Bwlch on 14, 15, 21 and 22 December or from Caernarfon to Waunfawr on the Welsh Highland Railway on 7, 8, 14, 15, 21and 22 December. Santa will be on the Llanberis Lake Railway on Saturdays 7, 14 & 21 December and Sundays 8 & 15; the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway at Porthmadog will see Santa on 14 and15 December.

For visitors to the Dolgellau and the North Cambrian coast area, the Talyllyn Railway will be running Santa steam trains on 22, 23 and 24 December to "Plas Nadolig" when each child will meet Santa and receive a present. There will be Santa Specials on the Fairbourne Railway on Saturday and Sunday 21 and 22 December. To the north of Machynlleth, visitors can travel to Santa’s grotto by steam train on the Corris Railway - dates are Saturday and Sunday 14 & 15 December. In the Denbigh, Corwen and Llangollen areas, the Llangollen Railway will be running four daily Santa Specials on Saturdays and Sundays from 30 November to 22 December plus Monday and Tuesday 23rd and 24th. The Rhyl Miniature Railway will be running six daily Santa Specials on 15, 21 and 22 December.

Mid Wales visitors to the Welshpool area have four daily Santa Specials on the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway on Saturdays and Sunday 14 & 15 and 21 & 22 December - departures are from Llanfair Caereinion only. Or in the Bala and Oswestry regions, join Santa at his very own special railway station on the Bala Lake Railway on Saturday and Sunday 8 and 9 December. Please note that pre-booking of these Santa specials is often essential to ensure a place on the train!
