Heritage Railways in Wales - Trains in March
Several of the many delightful Heritage Railways in Wales will be operating in March and most of these trains will be steam-hauled.
Every Sunday in March will see steam on the standard gauge Llangollen Railway plus on Monday 31st. Saturday 22 March will be a Diesel Day and heritage railcars will be operating on all other Saturdays and also from 24th to 28th March.
More steam on the Talyllyn Railway on Sundays in March; from the 9th onwards there will be two daily trains leaving their station at Tywyn on the North Cambrian Coast. Just up the coast from Tywyn, the Fairbourne Railway will be open on Saturdays 22 and 29 March and Sundays 23 & 30 March with four trains each day.
To the south of Fairbourne and Tywyn, Aberystwyth is the home of the Vale of Rheidol Railway; two daily trains will be steaming up to Devil’s Bridge every Saturday and Sunday in March.
In North Wales, the Ffestiniog Railway will be operational on Wednesdays and Thursdays in March from the 5th to the 20th; because of work at Porthmadog, these steam trains will depart and terminate at Minffordd. Two daily trains will run on the Ffestiniog from 22nd to 30th March except Monday 24th with departures from Porthmadog. The Welsh Highland Railway will also be open 22nd to 30th March (except Monday 24th) with steam from Caernarfon to Porthmadog).
The Llanberis Lake Railway will operate a restricted service on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 4th to 19th March (plus Sunday 16th). A normal service is timetabled for 23rd, 25th, 26th 27th and 30th March; trains are normally steam hauled. See Wales Cottage Holidays pages on Heritage Railways for details of all lines and nearby cottages.
