Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland

A festive extravaganza, Cardiff's Winter Wonderland brings together a host of classic Christmas activities right in the city centre. Split between the historic grounds of Cardiff Castle and the expansive City Hall Lawn, the event features a spectacular array of attractions. 

The castle hosts the popular undercover Ice Rink and Ice Trail, allowing skaters to glide under the towering Norman Keep regardless of the weather. Off the ice, you can also browse a plethora of traditional festive food stalls and the cosy, two-storey Alpine ski-lodge bar - Sur la Piste!

Head to the City Hall Lawn for the funfair and the towering Big Wheel, which offers panoramic views across the city’s sparkling Christmas lights. Entry to both sites is free, meaning you only pay for the attractions and refreshments you choose to enjoy, allowing you to tailor your festive fun.

Christmas at Bute Park

For an evening of illumination, Christmas at Bute Park is an absolute must see. This award-winning, after-dark trail transforms one of Cardiff's most beautiful parks - located directly behind Cardiff Castle - into Wales’ largest festive light display. The mile-long route is completely reimagined each year by award-winning lighting designers - ensuring it’s always a spectacular show.

Featuring around 15 different zones of light and sound, new installations for 2025 include shimmering water features, interactive play areas and a variety of spectacular projections set to a festive soundtrack. You’ll start and end your adventure in the Christmas Village, where you can buy a variety of delicious hot food and seasonal drinks.

Luminate at Margam Country Park

Set against the dramatic backdrop of Margam Castle, the Luminate light trail offers a truly atmospheric festive experience near Port Talbot. This enchanting, illuminated trail winds through the park's historic grounds and stunning woodland, creating a unique and magical mile-long journey. The light installations are carefully choreographed to music, providing an immersive show for all ages.

The event is designed to appeal to everyone, with dedicated sensory-friendly sessions offered at select times for a quieter, calmer visit. It's also one of the more inclusive trails, offering several dog-friendly evenings so your four-legged friends can join the fun. Halfway along the route, you can pause at the Castle Courtyard for festive treats, including mulled wine, hot chocolate, and the chance to toast your own marshmallows over open fire pits.

Swansea Waterfront Winterland

An enormously popular attraction, Swansea's Waterfront Winterland brings seasonal cheer to the city's picturesque Museum Park. Its main draw is the expansive, undercover outdoor ice rink, which welcomes all skill levels. Beyond the rink, the event is dominated by thrilling funfair rides and a magnificent Giant Wheel, offering fantastic views over Swansea.

Here you’ll also find the traditional Alpine Bar, a perfect spot to warm up with a hot drink, mulled wine, or a festive beer. Numerous food stalls offer a wide variety of warming seasonal treats, from Yorkshire pudding wraps to gourmet hot dogs.

Christmas events and activities in North Wales

The north of Wales offers an alternative festive atmosphere to many winter destinations, blending the wild, dramatic landscapes of Eryri (Snowdonia) with historical towns and charming coastal locations.

You’ll find that many Christmas events here tend to embrace the region’s unique heritage, offering experiences that range from visiting Santa in a deep underground cavern to stepping back in time for a traditional Victorian market.

Zipmas at Zip World Llechwedd

Zipmas takes the traditional grotto and places it deep underground in a former slate mine! Travel to meet Santa with a ride on a specially decorated underground train that transports guests 500 feet below the surface of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park.

Once underground, you will discover an illuminated, enchanted grotto where Santa and his elves await. The adventure also includes plenty of festive activities before the main event, such as helping the elves in the workshop and enjoying a complimentary mince pie and hot chocolate. Every child gets a gift, which often includes a piece of slate to decorate once back above ground, making this a distinctively Welsh and truly unforgettable festive trip.

Winterfest at Manorafon Farm Park

The Winterfest event at Manorafon Farm Park is a family celebration that centres around a magical live trail and Christmas village. As darkness falls, the farm is transformed into a world of twinkling lights and festive installations, with a magical trail leading guests through tunnels of sparkling lights and giant festive figures.

The experience is fully immersive, including visits to a charming Elf & Reindeer Pub for festive drinks and delicious Christmas market food. Children can often participate in activities like gingerbread decorating or interacting with characters along the live trail. 

Reindeer Lodge, Mold

Experience the magic of storytelling at the Reindeer Lodge, a magical Christmas event in North Wales. This immersive experience will see you journey through mystical woodlands and enchanted lakesides, as well as hidden elf villages to meet Santa Claus and his reindeer.

A variety of characters will join you on your adventure through the magical portal that will take families straight to Santa’s secret world. Complete your training and become a Guardian of Elven before helping the elves to build the toys. There’s a fantastic theatre show to enjoy, crafts to make and plenty of photo spots along the way.

Tenby Boxing Day Swim

A legendary fixture on the festive calendar, the Tenby Boxing Day Swim sees hundreds of brave souls shed their winter clothes and don their bathers, or fancy dress, to charge into the bracing waters of the Bristol Channel for charity. Held annually on North Beach, it’s a massive community event filled with fancy dress, cheering crowds and a wonderful atmosphere.

It's a fantastic chance to blow away the Christmas Day cobwebs and, more importantly, raise lots of cash for local charities. A themed dip, the 2025 swim is ‘All Things Welsh,’ encouraging swimmers to get creative with costumes inspired by Welsh culture, from red dragons to daffodils. After the chilly plunge, participants are welcomed back to shore to enjoy a beach bonfire, hot soup, and be given a commemorative medal to mark their achievement.

Tenby Santa Run

If you’re visiting Tenby for Christmas, you can ease yourself into the traditional Boxing Day plunge by taking part in the annual Tenby Santa Run. This family-friendly 3km fun run fills the historic streets of Tenby with hundreds of participants, all dressed in supplied Santa suits, running to the town centre for charity.

The event is the ultimate in festive fun, focusing on community fundraising rather than competitive racing. It's a great way for all ages and fitness levels to get involved, with shorter routes often available for younger children. Organised by the Tenby Round Table, your ticket includes a Santa suit and a medal, making it a perfect, light-hearted pre-Christmas event that supports local causes.

Castell Henllys Winter Solstice

For a historic take on the festive season, journey inland to the atmospheric Castell Henllys Winter Solstice. This reconstructed prehistoric fort marks the Winter Solstice (the shortest day of the year) with a special event, celebrating the point when the sun begins its return.

This special event involves storytelling, a bonfire and crafting sessions; you’ll even have the chance to meet the Mari Lwyd. Celebrating the Solstice in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, surrounded by the spectacular scenery, with ancient traditions, offers a beautiful and moving contrast with the modern Christmas rush.

Carew Castle Glow

Witness one of Pembrokeshire’s most spectacular castles in a completely new light with the seasonal Glow event at Carew Castle. This stunning medieval ruin - and its tidal millpond - is transformed by a dazzling display of festive lights and colour, creating a magical atmosphere as darkness descends.

The light trail takes visitors through the historic grounds and the Walled Garden, with musical performances from local choirs, filling the air with festive tunes. Hay Festival Winter Weekend

Christmas at Powis Castle and Garden

This year, the castle is creating the scheme ‘An Enchanted Christmas’ with its interior decorated in a spectacular Narnia-inspired winter wonderland, featuring additional magical design details to keep children entertained. Brecon Mountain Railway Santa Special

All aboard for an amazing Christmas experience! The Brecon Mountain Railway Santa Special is a festive adventure that delights all ages. Climb aboard a beautifully restored steam locomotive at Pant Station and journey 2 miles through the stunning foothills of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons).

The scenic ride takes you to Pontsticill Station, where you'll be welcomed by Santa's friendly elves before children get the chance to meet the main man himself in his charming grotto, to receive a special gift.
