Found on the shores of Swansea Bay, Mumbles is one of Wales’ most charming coastal villages. Mumbles is the kind of place that instantly makes you feel welcome, because it’s a characterful seaside town with a warm, laid-back atmosphere. Perfectly blending traditional seaside nostalgia with modern foodie finds, independent shops and breathtaking coastal walks, Mumbles is the place to be. Whether you’re planning a family friendly week away, or a relaxed getaway for two with your dog in tow, Mumbles delivers on charm, character and those simple pleasures that make a stay by the sea so special.
Wales Cottage Holiday’s Marketing Manager, and Mumbles resident, Laura Kerslake, has shared how she likes to spend a day in Mumbles: “I feel so lucky to live in Mumbles – there are so many ways to enjoy both a day and night out here. I usually start with a browse around the shops, and my son always insists on a trip to Captain’s Cabin. From there, we’ll wander down the promenade to the pier, where you’ll often find us in the arcade or playing on the beach, before stopping for lunch at Copperfish. An ice cream is an absolute must, so a visit to Joe’s is always on the to-do list! In the evening, I love having dinner at one of the sea-view restaurants, before meeting friends for a cocktail or two.”

Visit Mumbles Pier

A fixture of the local coastline since the Victorian era, Mumbles Pier has long been a family favourite. Grab a coffee and a bite at the café, have a go on the classic amusement arcade games, or hop aboard The Big Wheel (selected dates throughout the year) for panoramic sea views. There’s also a small, sheltered beach here, which is perfect for rock pooling with the kids or dipping your toes in the water. If you're visiting Mumbles at Christmas, make sure you also check out the pier's wonderful selection of festive activities, you can find out more in our guide to where to meet Santa in South Wales.
Taste some of the world’s best ice cream

You can’t visit Mumbles without treating yourself to an ice cream or two – it’s practically the law. Leading the charge is Joe’s Ice Cream, a local institution that’s been serving its famous fresh vanilla ice cream since 1922. Though they offer a tempting range of flavours these days, the original vanilla is still unbeatable.
Another must-stop is Verdi’s, a family-run Italian cafe and gelateria with sweeping views over Swansea Bay. On a sunny afternoon, there’s nowhere better to be than outside on their terrace, working your way through one of their decadent sundaes while the boats bob on the water.

Eat fish and chips on the beach

Nothing says ‘seaside holiday’ quite like fish (or sausage!) and chips by the sea. Grab yours, like we did, from Copperfish at Mumbles Pier and enjoy them with your feet in the sand. Locals also swear by Johnnie’s Fish Bar, a hidden gem tucked away behind the main streets, perfectly placed for picking up a classic chippy tea to enjoy along the prom as the sun sets.

The Swansea Bay Promenade stretches from Swansea to Mumbles, making it ideal for a leisurely walk, a morning run, or a family bike ride. Join locals and visitors as you take in the fresh sea air and scenic views. Stop at Ripples for an ice cream, let the kids burn off some energy at the skate park, or splash about in the open-air Lido on sunny days. A coffee from The Junction Cafe makes the perfect pit stop. Or walk all the way to the city centre, you'll find plenty of things to do in Swansea for the whole family.
Enjoy a delicious dinner with sea views

Foodies are spoilt for choice in Mumbles. Tuck into locally sourced dishes at The Oyster House, or visit On the Rocks for a unique dining experience where you can cook your own steak to perfection on a hot stone at your table – all the while enjoying one of the best sunset views in town.
For laid-back, vegetarian dining, Croeso Lounge is a lauded choice (and it’s dog-friendly too), while seafood lovers should head to Langland's Brasserie overlooking the beach for fresh fish and seasonal dishes.

Watch the sunset with a cocktail in-hand

End your day in true coastal holiday style with a cocktail in-hand as the sun dips below the horizon. The rooftop terraces of the restaurants at Oyster Wharf are perfect for sunset views over Swansea Bay. Or head to Ula, Mumbles’ coolest bar, known for relaxed days and disco nights.
Get historical at Oystermouth Castle

Above the village, Oystermouth Castle is steeped in history and makes a fascinating visit for all ages. You can wander through the ancient ruins, climb to the battlements, and you can even check out the medieval graffiti in the chapel. The castle also hosts a range of family-friendly events throughout the year, from outdoor theatre to food festivals.
