For a Christmas celebration layered with history and local charm, look no further than the ancient festive traditions that still bring light and music to the darkest part of the Welsh winter. While the familiar sights of Santa and twinkling trees have taken root, unique Welsh customs like Plygain and the Mari Llwyd offer a deeper connection to the past, making a cottage stay here truly special during the winter season.

Plygain (the Dawn Service) is an ancient carol service held in churches across rural Wales. Starting before sunrise, often between 3am and 6am, the church is lit only by candlelight, creating an ethereal atmosphere. The service is a celebration of Welsh carols (carolau Plygain) sung a cappella by local groups and choirs to welcome the Christmas dawn. It is a profoundly beautiful experience.

Perhaps the most famously unique Welsh custom is the Mari Llwyd (Grey Mare). This is a distinctly Welsh blend of folklore and revelry, usually involving a procession led by a hobby horse (of sorts) – a horse skull covered in a white sheet and adorned with ribbons. Mari and her followers go from house to house, engaging in pwnco (a rhyming battle). If Mari's side wins the verbal sparring, they are invited in for food and drink, bringing good luck and laughter to the home.

Christmas at the Reindeer Lodge, Leeswood

For a dazzling sensory experience, the Luminate trail at Margam Country Park is a must-see. As darkness descends over the historic castle and grounds, this spectacular mile-long illuminated path comes alive, blending light, music and interactive installations, creating an immersive after-dark journey for all ages. 

Wander beneath shimmering trees, through glowing tunnels, and enjoy playful, interactive displays. Make sure to stop halfway for a festive treat or to toast marshmallows over the warm, crackling fire pits.

Guests are treated to seasonal treats before boarding the beautifully restored train, with the main highlight being the stop at Pontsticill Station, where you will be greeted by Santa’s cheerful elves before meeting the man himself in his charming grotto to receive a special gift.

Steaming into Christmas

The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways offer a range of fantastic festive events, but the spectacular Christmas highlight is the Welsh Highland Railway's ‘Santa Trains’. Starting from Caernarfon, this scenic journey takes you right through the majestic Snowdonia National Park (Eryri). Once onboard, Santa and his elves make their way through the carriages, delivering gifts to all the children, whilst encouraging everyone to enjoy the stunning views. 

Adults also receive festive treats, including mulled wine and mince pies, making it a perfect pre-Christmas outing in North Wales.

Zipmas, Santa’s Underground Grotto

Experience one of North Wales' most unique Christmas events by descending deep underground for Zipmas at Zip World in Llechwedd. Your unique journey begins with a ride on the cable car railway, taking you into the former slate mine. Here, you'll wander through three enchanting, festively lit chambers, including an impressive light maze and Santa's workshop, before finding the man himself in his cosy grotto.

Santa’s Adventure
