Get Sandy Paws on Aberystwyth Beach

Aberystwyth North Beach is a brilliant place to take your dog for a run, walk or bounce across the golden sands, whilst you take in the stunning views across Cardigan Bay. The beach is dog friendly, but it’s worth noting there are seasonal restrictions; between 1 May and 30 September, dogs are not allowed on the northern part of the beach, between the Landing Stage and Craig Glais. Outside of these dates, dogs are allowed on the entire beach. 

A classic seaside destination, North Beach offers a mix of natural beauty and traditional seaside charm; backed by a promenade lined with Victorian and Edwardian buildings, you can also walk your dog along the promenade, but please be mindful that they should remain on a lead.

Take a ride on the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway

The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway – the longest electric funicular railway in the UK – is a fantastic way to enjoy stunning coastal views with your four-legged companion. This is a dog-friendly railway, so you can bring your well-behaved dog along for the ride; it’s a perfect adventure. 

Hop aboard the train at the northern end of the promenade and once at the top, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the town and the sea. There are plenty of walking paths and open spaces for your dog to explore once here, making it a great place for a leisurely stroll and a day of adventure.

  • Opening times: 10am–5pm, 7 days a week from April to November, sometimes later (until 6pm) during peak season
  • Cost: Return ticket – adult £8, children £7, students and seniors £7.50

All aboard the Vale of Rheidol Railway

For a scenic expedition with your beloved hound, the Vale of Rheidol Railway is a wonderful way of taking in the breathtaking landscape. A narrow gauge railway, it runs for 12 miles from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains. Built at the turn of the 20th century to serve the local mining industry, it is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. 

The journey takes about an hour each way, passing through the awe-inspiring countryside, including wooded valleys, steep hills and rugged, open moorland. Your dog is welcome on board the train, however, there is a small charge and dogs are allowed in all third-class carriages only; they are not allowed in the Observation Saloon.

Visit Devil’s Bridge

Devil's Bridge is a small village in Ceredigion, known for its natural attractions; stunning waterfalls and three bridges built one on top of the other. Nestled in a picturesque valley, the village is surrounded by lush green hills and forests, with waterfalls that cascade down a steep gorge, which is a natural wonder as well as a popular tourist attraction. The bridges date back to the 18th century and offer visitors a truly unique perspective of the falls. 

Devil's Bridge village is a great place to visit with your dog, as there are plenty of places to walk and explore with your furry friend. The Devil's Bridge Falls are a short walk from the village and there are also several walking trails in the surrounding area, so there are plenty of opportunities to sniff out adventures. Dogs are welcome on most of the trails, but it is important to keep them on a lead in areas where there is livestock.

Dog-friendly cafes in Aberystwyth

Many independent coffee shops in Aberystwyth are known for their welcoming atmosphere towards dogs; you’re likely to find water bowls readily available, dog treats offered and a relaxed attitude towards well-behaved pups.

Just a stone's throw from the famous promenade, Coffee#1 Aberystwyth is set within the charming old central hotel. This wonderful building, full of character and charm, offers a delightful escape from the bustling crowds. Head upstairs to the mezzanine to relax and enjoy your coffee – you’ll still feel part of the lively atmosphere below. 

Well-behaved dogs are welcome too; the cafe provides designated areas within the store to ensure a comfortable experience for both dog owners and other customers with details such as water bowls available – and they occasionally offer dog treats too.

Little Devil’s Cafe

Little Devil’s Cafe is also reknowned for its gluten-free and vegan options, making it a great choice for those with dietary restrictions. You’ll find a wide variety of dishes on the menu, including hearty breakfasts and loaded paninis. As for dogs, your furry friend is sure to be fussed over by the staff, who’ve been known to drop the occasional sausage!

Inn On The Pier

Enjoy a scenic drink with your doggo at the Inn On The Pier and soak up some of the most fantastic views of the area within stunningly ornate surroundings. Located on the Royal Pier, this welcoming haunt offers a lively and friendly atmosphere. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome – typically until 9pm – within designated areas of the bar, including the decking area at the front of the building and nominated zones at the Inn on the Pier and Upstairs Bar. Traditional pub grub is also available, or you can pop next door for delicious fish and chips.
