Hay-on-Wye is a small, pretty market town in the Welsh Borders, close to the scenery of the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains. It’s known as ‘the town of books’, thanks to its plethora of bookshops, and hosts the hugely popular Hay Festival, with talks from leading authors, thinkers and more. The Kilvert Gallery in the village of Clyro, near Hay-on-Wye, is well known for its enthusiastic representation of highly original and occasionally provocative work by both established artists and young contemporaries. The gallery houses a constantly changing selection of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jewellery, furniture, papier-mache and more unusual three-dimensional work. Local legend tells of Hay Castle being built in a day by Matilda, a giantess who threw a stone across the Wye on completing her day-long building marathon! These days Hay Castle is a vibrant centre for arts, literature and learning.
