The original centre of the parish is at Llan on the road to Llanidloes, where the local parish church of St Mary is located. The current centre rose to local prominence with the building of the new turnpike road in 1821 and the arrival of the railway in 1861. Despite being a small village, there is plenty to see and do nearby. The Machinations Visitor Centre in the village is open all year and has the only permanent exhibition of contemporary Automata (mechanical moving models) in the UK. The hands-on interactive moving model characters spin, whirl, or bob up and down with fascinating mechanisms displaying cogs, cams, and levers with an infinite variety of movements. As well as this, Llanbrynmair is a great base for holidays in Mid Wales, with the southern fringes of Snowdonia / Eryri National Park only 10 miles away too.
