Royal Welsh Events in 2014
If you’re staying in Mid Wales and Brecon Beacons cottages this summer, do try and make a point of getting to the prestigious Royal Welsh Show, which runs from 21 to 24 July.
The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society was formed in 1904, when the first show was held in Aberystwyth. Over the last 100 years or so the Society has developed greatly and now has over 18,000 members. The Royal Welsh Show in the summer is a huge event in the Welsh calendar with close to ¼ million people visiting during the course of the four days.
Since the 1960s the Royal Welsh has been held at its permanent showground just outside Builth Wells. This ideal location in the Heart of Wales hosts the Royal Welsh’s own three events – the Spring Festival on 17 and 18 May, the Show in the summer and the Winter Fair on 1 and 2 December – as well as a host of other diverse activities. The Welsh Beekeepers Association hold their convention on 22 March and there’s a Championship Dog Show on 19 April. Wonderwool Wales showcases the best in Welsh and British wool and natural fibres on 26 and 27 April.
The first weekend in May sees the International Antiques & Collectors Fair of Wales, while the following Saturday (10th) pony lovers can enjoy the sights at the Spring Sale of Welsh Ponies & Cobs. The excitement of rally driving begins with the Severn Valley National Rally on 31 May and the Welsh Castles Relay Race (road and mountain running) is on 8 June. The first half of the year rounds off with the Wales & Border Counties Hound Show on 26 June.
